What is the Utah Trademark database?
What exactly is the Utah Business Entity Search? Go to the Utah Division of Corporations & Commercial Code business search website to conduct a Utah Business Entity Search. There, you can look up information and business filings for Utah-based domestic and foreign corporations, limited liability companies, partnerships, sole proprietorships, and DBAs.
What kinds of business registrations, filings, and entities are available on the entity search website?
Business entity filings such as LLC certificates of organizations, corporation articles of incorporation, annual business renewals, merger filings, and other public information about Utah business entities are available for download on the Utah business search website.
How do I perform a business entity search and look for similar names?
You can look up a Utah business registration by directly inputting your desired business name into the search bar and look for exact matches and partial matches based on how you structure your search. The results will indicate that your business name appears to be available if it is available. Business names cannot be confusingly similar to other business names, and you should consider how similar your name is compared to other businesses by actual words used, sound, appearance, and general impression.
What is the Utah Trademark database?
You should also use the Utah Trademark Database search to determine if there are registered Utah trademarks that may be similar to your name but that may not necessarily be registered as businesses (think, e.g., a certain product line trademark owned by a company that is registered as a business). You can also search the trademark database of the United States Patent and Trademark Office for federal trademarks. However, searching the trademark database of the USPTO is very technical, so I strongly suggest that you hire a lawyer to help you. See my other article, Starting a Utah LLC (2023), on how to set up a Utah LLC.
Hiring an LLC Lawyer
I understand that the LLC registration process is usually the least of a new business owner’s concerns, especially when they want to focus on running their new business. If you would like to avoid potential missteps in setting up a Utah LLC, I will take care of the entire business entity registration process and let you focus on what is most important: running and growing your business.
While you do not technically need a lawyer to set up a Utah LLC, hiring one can make sure that your business is properly organized for success and can help avoid future problems.
